ReplyDelete1. Historians are still confused as to the underlying causes of WW1. But whatever the reason, many leaders of the conflicting countries had no real idea of the war machine that they were putting into motion.
2. The world experienced industrial revolution, which led to jealousies and nationalism, resulting in them asking for partners they could trust if they fought against countries they didn’t like. Both sides thought the war would end quickly.
3. Civilians became military targets due to their value to the war-making powers of each nation. By the end of the war, millions would have died.
4. A large amount of soldiers mutinied their posts due to them not wanting to fight anymore, and in 1918, German civilian support for the war collapsed, causing the leader of Germany to flee to neutral Holland. By the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the war was over.
5. The peace that followed the war was not likely to last, for hostility was still brewing in the hearts of the people. 9 million soldiers had died, 4 empires had fell, and large parts of France and other countries lied in ruin.
1. Air raids on Paris (didn't have planes back in the Civil War).
2. Submarine warfare by the Germans (didn't have submarines back then either).
3. Gas attacks in the Second Battle of Ypres (back in the Civil War, we didn't know how to use dangerous gasses properly).

ReplyDeletePrologue- WWI, also known as the Great War. WWI was the first modern war. WWI lasted from 1914 to 1918. Historians can easily identify the literal "smoking gun" that set the War in motion: a revolver used by a Serbian nationalist to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne) in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.
First Paragraph- In the four decades prior to August 1914 the western world and the countries in its sphere of influence were undergoing unprecedented changes in every area of society. Industrial expansion and wealth, both personal and national, had a profound impact on economic life. These changes lead to conflicts, jealousies and differences that were not easily reconcilable.
Second Paragraph- Both sides originally believed that the Great War would be over quickly. In Germany, this belief was based on a long established war strategy called the Schlieffen Plan. The German generals were so confident of success that Kaiser Wilhelm II proclaimed that he would have "Paris for lunch, St. Petersburg for dinner." The plan required precise timing, with no interruptions in the timetable -- its first objective was to capture Paris in precisely 42 days, and force the French to surrender. The German armies would then shift their focus to the eastern front and defeat the Russians before they were fully prepared to fight.
Third Paragraph-In the spring of 1915 the trenches along the western front were filled with millions of soldiers, at the average rate of one soldier per four inches of trench. The job behind the front lines was to keep the men fed, equipped and ready to continue the fighting until the end came.
The civilians behind the lines were as important to victory as the men on the lines. Because of their value to the war-making power of each nation, civilians became the target of the enemy. Since both sides targeted both civilians and military personnel, and mobilized men and resources at an unprecedented rate, the Great War was a "total war."
Fourth Paragraph-In early 1916, the British had over 1 million men in Belgium and France, while the French and German armies had re-supplied their front line troops. The stage was set for both sides to try to make the breakthrough on the battlefield that would assure each victory.
Instead, by year's end, both sides would lose nearly one million men with very little change in position of the front line trenches. The battlefields became "killing fields" and only one word, "slaughter", accurately describes the extent of the killing, violence and destruction.

ReplyDeleteFifth Paragraph-combatant nations, many people - civilians and soldiers alike - still wanted to continue fighting to victory. The combatant nations rejected all the peace initiatives that were proposed in 1917. As the months passed, however, people on both sides of the conflict began to question the violence and massive slaughter. People everywhere sought ways to cope with, if not escape, the environment of war. Russian front line soldiers grew increasingly disillusioned and apathetic. Many refused to obey orders, retreating when commanded to advance; they deserted the military and engage in open rebellion and mass mutiny. In France, a failed offensive in the spring of 1917 resulted in a mutiny not against the war but against the way it was waged by the general staff.
Sixth Paragraph-The year 1918 started with a major German offensive on the western front, which the Allies stopped. With the help of the Americans -- who declared war on Germany in 1917 -- the Allies then engaged in a highly successful set of offensives of their own. Germany's civilian support for the war eventually collapsed, and a mutiny by the German navy that sparked civil riots sweep through the cities. In early November, the Kaiser abdicated and fled to neutral Holland. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, a cease-fire went into effect for all combatants. The war was over.
Seventh Paragraph-With the armistice of November 11, 1918, the war was over, however, the world could not return to the way it was - to what was 'normal.' Four empires had disappeared, a new menace labeled "Bolshevism" arose, and millions of people tasted the ideas and feelings associated with nationalism, national self-determination and democracy. The peace that followed the war was not one that was likely to last. The efforts to adjust to the war and what people experienced during and after World War I would dominate decisions in every area for the rest of the century. For millions, the war would continue for months, years and even decades after November 11th.
Eighth Paragraph-The Great War had been the worst disaster in history. Nine million soldiers were killed. Four empires had collapsed and large parts of France, Belgium and Russia lay devastated. The old order had been decimated and a new one was taking shape -- and this struggle would prove even bloodier than the war itself.
Millions of people - military and civilian - in every combatant nation had to cope with the war experience and its aftermath. Some people tried not to remember the war, while others built monuments to those who had died. Many went to the grave burdened by the unanswered question: "What did it all mean?"

ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of debate as to the long term causes for World War I. The war was a new frontier and many people had no idea the devastation it would cause. World War I lasted 1,500 days and took the lives of approximately nine million people.
One major cause for World War I was the changing economy. This changing economy led to conflict’s, in case of war countries began making alliances and two powers were formed: the allies and the central power.
Both sides believed the War would be short and easy. Germans believed this because of their countries strategy, Schlieffen Plan this was a plan to make the war an easy victory for the Germans making themselves a major world power.
During World War I civilians behind the line was as important as those on the line because the civilians made war supplies for each nation. Because of this civilians became a target for other countries killing many more lives making World War I a “total war”.
Slaughter is considered to be the only word that accurately describes the violence in World War I. Both the allies and the central powers were trying to make a battlefield breakthrough leading to nearly one million deaths on each side.
Both sides of the war rejected peace offers and wanted to fight to the end, but by late 1917 people on both sides questioned the violence of the war. Everywhere people wanted to end the war and as a result solders began disobeying orders and people were beginning to want to end the war.
After a failed German offensive the Allies set out an offensive which was much more successful. In early November of 1918 the Germans surrendered ending the Great War.
After World War I four major world powers had disappeared and a new menace labeled Bolshevism arose. The peace that followed World War I would not last long and for many the Great War had never ended.
World War I was the greatest devastation the world had seen and it wasn’t something people could easily get over. Many people did not understand the outcome of the war and wondered what it meant.
On August 30 1914 the Germans raid Paris by air. This would not have been possible during the Civil War for multiple reasons. One reason is that the airplane had not been invented and because bombs had nto yet been invented.
The Germans submarine war fare could not have happened either. Although boats were invented during the Civil War submarines were not and boats during the civil war were not used in the same way as they were during World War I.
During the second battle of ypres the Germans use poison gas to kill many allied troops. This was the first ever successful gas bombing use. During the Civil War gas bombing wasn't invented.

ReplyDelete1. World War I, also known as the Great War, was during 1914-1918. It was caused by a number of complicated factors, including, existing treaties among nations, miscalculations by military leaders, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand ( heir to the Austro- Hungarian throne) in Sarajevo, and desire for control of territory and resources. The Great War which lasted 1,500 days, was one of the first “modern” wars because of all the weapons that they used that were similar to the ones now.

When will this war be over? The Russians started to refuse to obey orders, retreat when ordered to advance, and desert the military and engage in open rebellion and mass mutiny.

In the weeks after the assassination, none of the critical leaders had the power or will to slow down the decisions, actions, reactions and attitude shifts of key government and military leaders.
3. Stalemate- New styles of warfare, like the use of gas and heavy artillery, produced new kinds of horror and unprecedented levels of suffering and death. When the German invasion of France failed to take Paris or destroy French and British resistance on the river Marne, stalemate quickly followed.
4. Total War- The Allied force eventually abandoned the assault with 46,000 dead. This total war affected the lives of many different people: in some communities unprecedented casualty rates especially among young officers stripped young women of all their male contemporaries.
5. Slaughter- The goal of the German commander was not territory, but to bleed his enemy to death. The battle lasted nine months and in the end the front lines were nearly the same, while over 300,000 French and Germans were killed and over 750,000 were wounded.
6. Mutiny- For armies, it was outright rebellion; half the French army mutinied in 1917, refusing to undertake senseless attacks. Entire populations were becoming restless and resentful with the conflict.
7. Collapse- . Once in it, however, he urged the United States to "make the world safe for Democracy" and by 1918, five million American men were in uniform. In October, the revolt of the German Navy triggered the final collapse of the German war effort. The Kaiser abdicated and fled to Holland. The guns of the Great War finally fell silent on November 11, 1918.
8. Hatred/ Hungary- Though the armistice was in effect, the Allies continued to wage war against Germany via a naval blockade and to pressure Germany into acquiescence at Versailles. The United States briefly sent troops to Russia to overthrow the Bolsheviks, but this half-hearted and ineffective interference in Russian affairs would only lay the groundwork for the Cold War decades later.
9. War Without End- For the "lost generation" the war became a war without end, one that continued through missing limbs, mutilated faces and shaking bodies.Memorials were established for the fallen, and people visited the battlefields to retrace the footsteps of their loved ones. Millions also searched for hope and messages from the departed through Spiritualism.
10. WWI Timeline- The sound of Christmas carols across No Man’s Land encourages troops from both sides to exchange greetings. The truce is spontaneous and was experienced by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of soldiers.Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie the Duchess of Hohenberg, are killed by Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The Austrian government suspects that Serbia is responsible.

ReplyDelete1. prologue
After Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination with a revolver, chemical weapons rang out on the battlefield. Country’s started forming alliances and geared up for battle.
2. explosion
Most of the countries were undergoing changes to prepare for the coming war and they made changes to their industrial expansion, and so on. These changes led to problems in their system, and country’s started to look for allies.
3. stalemate
Sides were sure that the war would end in a short amount of time, but it wasn't true. All of the war unraveled when a German army started to invade Belgium to get to Paris to invade it, and so the war began.
4. total war
By 1915, trenches were filled with millions of troops, ready to fight the war, head on. Both sides wanted to take control of their enemies and of the enemys civilians.
5. slaughter
In 1915, the British had 1 million men in Belgium and France fighting to gain control, while the Germans resupplied. What the British didn't know was that they all would lose 1 million men at the end of the war.
6. mutiny
After millions of people dead, people started to ask what the point was of mass slaughter of soldiers and civilians. The Russians stopped obeying orders and retreated when they wanted to and tried to escape the military life.
7. collapse
In 1918 Germans set up offenses and so did the americans but the americans were better, forcing the Germans to retreat and their support collapsing. The collapse forced riots in the streets and forcing the Germans to surrender. The war ended.
8. hatred and hunger
After the war had ended people couldn't return to normal life, 4 empires gone and a new menace had risen. But the wars weren't over yet countries still had arguments and differences but they were worked out.
9.
The war was the worst disaster in history, almost nine million people dead and civilizations gone. Some people tried to take the the war out of their minds, and some put up remembrances for the dead.
Mechanically operated machine guns weren't possible because they didn't have the technology and weren't that far in the time yet.
Planes because they didn't have the technology for that either.
cars because they didn't have the engineering for that.

ReplyDelete1. World War one, took place from 1914-1918, it was between the Allies and the Central Powers. This was the first war where chemical weapons were used and this completely changed the war.
2. Explosion-No one event or person caused the Great War. There were many factors that contributed to mobilization of the belligerents.
3. From the very beginning, the war grew rapidly out of control. New styles of warfare, like the use of gas and heavy artillery, produced new kinds of horror and unprecedented levels of suffering and death.
4. Total War-By 1915, the conflict had spread across boundaries between continents and peoples, becoming a global war. A fact grimly confirmed by the unlikely battle between Turks and Australians on the Turkish cliffs of Gallipoli.
5. Slaughter- In 1916, some of the most appalling battles in human history took place on the Western Front. The Battle of Verdun became for the French what Gettysburg is for Americans.
6. Munity- After three years of war, men, armies and nations were nearing a breaking point. For individual soldiers, it emerged as "shell shock," a personal withdrawal from an intolerable reality of trench warfare.
7. Collapse- The odds looked bad for the Allies in 1918. With Russia knocked out of the war by revolution and the French army rocked by mutiny, Germany stopped the Allies' offensive on the Western Front. But all of Europe was running out
8. Hatred and Hunger- With the armistice of November 11, 1918, the war was over, however, the world could not return to the way it was - to what was 'normal.' Four empires had disappeared, a new menace labeled "Bolshevism" arose, and millions of people tasted the ideas and feelings associated with nationalism, national self-determination and democracy.
9. War without end- For the "lost generation" the war became a war without end, one that continued through missing limbs, mutilated faces and shaking bodies. The question that haunted civilians throughout Europe was why so many of their fathers, husbands, sons and brothers had to die?
summarize
1. On August 30, 1914 Germany conducted an air raid on Paris. This is very different from anything that might have happened in the Civil War because now airplanes were a new invention that allowed people to attack from the air.
2. On April 22, 1915 the germans started the battle by using poisonous gases that affected 10,000 Allied troops. This obviously would not have been an option in the Civil War because they did not have the right equipment to do so.
3. Germany also used torpedos to attack and sink the Lusitania passenger ship in 1915. This was a development from the civil war because in the past torpedos were not a weapon option because they had not been created yet. The civil war also took place mostly on land and did not involve as much battling on the water.

ReplyDeleteThe Prologue
It talks about how world war I was a great war and approximately how many casualties there were in the war at a specific place in the war. Our country-the United States, joined the war in 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to “make the world safe for democracy”.
The Explosion
Many people looked to partners they could turn to incase of war. most of theses people were the European nations. The majority of the European leaders were optimistic about their future because of their expanding European economies.
Stalemate
Many people on either side believed that the war would end soon. Kaiser Wilhelm II demanded to take over Paris and force the French to surrender, which is a sucky thing for me...because I love Paris!!!!! I love it because it is my best friend’s favorite place, ever. :)
Total War
By the year 1915, the trenches for war were completely filled up. They had a soldier within every four inches of the trench!!! People who took care of them made sure that they had enough food, the right close and any other resources before they end came.
Slaughter
In 1916, the british had over 1 million men in Belgium and France. Both sides kept losing millions of men, and the battle fields were known as “killing fields” and the word “slaughter” meant that a person had died.
Mutiny
In 1917, when millions of soldiers died, many people wanted to keep fighting for victory. Russian soldiers became very naughty and so they started to stop obeying the rules and laws, which was not a good thing at all!
Collapse
The Americans declared war on the Germans! War ended on the 11th hour, the 11th day on the 11th month. How interesting…
Hater\Hunger
After the war has ended, thing can not go back to the way they were. Peace did not come to the people long after the war.
War Without End
The great war was the most intense and the worst disaster in history. 9 million soldiers were killed.
1. The Germans used poison gas.

ReplyDelete1. Prologue. World War I was so called the "great war" which was the first man made catastrophe. It lasted from 1914 till 1918.
2. Explosion. The 4 decades before 1914 was a time of expansion of wealth which lead to conflict and jealousy. That is why the nations formed defenses and alliances to protect themselves in case of war
3. Stalemate. Both the allies and the central powers believed the war would end soon and the Germans had a reason for this. They had a plan called the Schlieffen plan which was such a quick plan that Kaiser Wilhelm II claimed he would have Paris for lunch and St. Peters burg for dinner.
4. Total war. In 1915 the trenches on both sides were filled millions of soldiers. The average soldier space in a trench was 4 inches.
5. Slaughter. Because each side had so many men and supplies on the trenches the allies and central powers were ready if either side would try to breakthrough and end the war. But instead by the end of 1916 both sides would lose 1 million men and the only correct term for this violence was slaughter.
6. Mutiny. After millions of soldiers have been killed in 1917, civilians and soldiers began to question the violence and why it went on. The only reason it went on like this was because both sides refused to accept peace negotiations.
7. Collapse. In 1918 after the Germans had a successful campaign things began to go downhill for them because the allies recently had the Americans join them in the fight. Not soon after many of these defeats the civilian support collapsed for Germany which led to mutiny from the German navy, which motivated city wide riots, which caused Kaiser Wilhelm II to flee to neutral Holland.
8. Hatred & Hunger. With the armistice, the physical fighting was over however Europe could not return to its original self because more countries continued nationalism. Because of this the war was still waging for millions.
9. War without end. The Great War was the worst disaster in history 9 million people killed, 4 empires gone, and France, Russia, And Belgium lay devastated. After the war millions of people had to cope with what the war had done, some people forgot it, while others built monuments for those that died.
10. Tanks were a new invention of the 1900's. Planes were also a new invention of the 1900's. Poison gas bombs were not yet invented during the civil war.
1. World War I was in the year of 1914-1918 the 20th century making a great mistake in history. They had revolvers named a smoking gun put the war. Scholars debating the war and what could it could cause. The chemical weapons they had made turned the table with bombs, having allies and many guns and all.
ReplyDelete2. Four decades western countries grew in wealth and the people got jealous with conflict, during this the major European expanded their land
still going riley s
2.territory and wealth.
ReplyDelete3.both nations thought that the war would be over quickly but it wasn't based on a straggly named the Schlieffen Plan. the Germans were trying to capture Italy, they succeeded and took over, they had amazing and advanced weapons for there time.
4.trench warfare was fears many people dieing, only able to go to the bathroom were they stood. and watching there friends die beside them. there were lots of diseases that people got from trench warfare because of rats hypothermia and frostbite. most people got trench foot sores all over there feet and frostbite covering that, protecting the civilians behind them because they were the main target to try to shoot.
4. Brittan had over 1 million people both side tried to blast through each others wall. but once you got on the battle field it was the killing field over each year 1 million people died on each team through rotating.
5.in1917 many people kept fighting outside of the war. but the nations tried to stop them but they found ways around getting caught. most German soldiers wouldn't listen to the commands dieing falling and getting beat to the end of the war.
6.in 1917 Americans promised war on the Germans. during 1918 they came with a heavy blow the Germans fled taking city's out trying to build a stronger nation Germany collapses and loses the war.
7.when the war ended the war still scared many people. because of the people that died and money that was lost, people tried to forget this ugly peace of history but it will be hard for them for years and years.
8.this war was a bloody war 9 million warriors were killed fighting for there nation. they wore not as worried as what had happened but would happen.
