ReplyDelete1. Fort Sumter was the first battle in the Civil War. It took place on April 12, 1861. Fort Sumter, previously a Federal fort, was taken over by the Confederacy. The Union soldiers fight hard, but they eventually have to surrender. Lincoln then calls for 75,000 more volunteers and the war officially starts.
2. The Southern states that were NOT the border states would have been very upset that the border states could keep their slaves, but no, not them. They would have to grin-and-bear it and they didn’t like that Lincoln favored the border states. They didn't know the reason why he did that.

ReplyDelete1. Fort Sumter was taken by Southern troops on April 12, 1861. The Union soldiers stationed at Fort Sumter fought back but were forced to surrender. Not one man was killed. President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to become soldiers as 4 more states joined the Confederacy. It was the start of a bloody war.
2. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves would be considered free in any states that fought against the Union. Of course, this caused uproar among the Southern states, while for the Northern states, it added a reason for fighting the South besides keeping the country from dividing: to free the slaves. However, the Emanci…the Imancea…the Emi…you know what I mean, did not say that the slaves in the states that weren’t fighting the Union could be free. The Border States, in order to keep the peace as well as to keep the important facilities from joining the Confederate movement, got to keep their slaves. This must have caused a considerable amount of complaining from abolitionists.
3. General Lee generally (<- See what I did there?) wanted to end the conflict between the North and South, taking advantage of the Union’s weariness. General Lee marched 70,000 troops from Virginia to Pennsylvania. But the Confederate army accidentally ran into Union forces at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After 3 days of fighting and over 50,000 deaths on both sides, the North drove the South away.
4. The Union captured Vicksburg, Mississippi in the outcome of the battle. From there, they could control the Mississippi River, essentially cutting the South in two. The Confederates couldn’t send supplies from one side of the river to the other.
5. The last campaign of the war was Petersburg, a communications center near the capital

of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. The Union laid siege on it for 10 months. Eventually, General Lee retreated and the Union was free to take Richmond.
Delete6. The March to the Sea was led by William T. Sherman. The March to the Sea was meant to discourage the South into surrendering, and because the South did just that, the blow on morale was ultimately successful. And even if the South did not surrender, they would still have almost zero food left.
7. Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.
8. Fredrick Douglass was an escaped slave who became a leader of the abolitionist movement. Much earlier, he also spoke for woman's rights.

Soon after the battle Abraham Lincoln calls for seventy five thousand volunteers, and more states succeed from the union.

ReplyDeleteThe first battle in the Civil War was Fort Sumpter which took place on April 12, 1861. The Confederates began using a federal fort for war preparations. Because it is Federal property, Abraham Lincoln knew it was the Unions property. Lincoln sends Union troops to Fort Sumpter but Confederate troops made Union troops retreat. After this Lincoln calls for 75,000 men to volunteer to take back federal territory.
The Emancipation Proclamation got such a variety of reactions because of how the country was split in two. Because many people believed that slavery are unmoral, people where happy about Lincoln’s law. In the United States and Confederate states, whoever people liked slavery so when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation this people had a very different response to the law.
Gettysburg was the turning point of the war because the Union took the Confederates by surprise and because it had one of the highest numbers of casualties during the war. General Lee was hoping to end the war by marching his men to Harrisburg but his men accidentally met up with Union troops in July of 1863. Union troops got their second major victory here by forcing Confederate troops to retreat.
The battle of Vicksburg was an important Union victory because it was the first major Union victory. Vicksburg also gave the Union complete control over the Mississippi River and cut the Confederate states in half. The Union won Vicksburg by pounding the city with artillery for 17 days during July 1863 until the city surrendered.
Petersburg was part of the last campaign of the Civil War. Petersburg is a communication center that was under siege for 10 months until finally General Lee fled from the Confederate capitol and the Union took control of the capitol.
William Sherman’s, March to the Sea, was an important Union victory for many reasons. One reason is because the Union was able to destroy many Confederate money makers like cotton. The Union also was able to burn a lot of food for Confederate troops. The March to the Sea helped the Union army greatly.
Abraham Lincoln was the United States’ 16th president. Lincoln led the country through four years of war. Lincoln wrote and issued the Emancipation Proclamation to help free escaped slaves. Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth 5 days after the surrender at Appomattox. Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States and got mad at the Confederate people because they were not willing to: Create a draft, create slave armies, or give up their food and supplies for the good of the war.
Fredrick Douglass was, to most people, the most influential African American during the civil war era. Douglas was an escaped slave. After escaping, Douglass bought his freedom and joined the abolitionist movement. Later he convinced Lincoln to allow African Americans to serve as soldiers.
The last “battle” in the civil war was the surrender at Appomattox. Lee was trying to march men into Union territory but met with Union troops at Appomattox. Here Lee realized the Confederates had little to no chance of victory so he surrendered to Gran at the Appomattox courthouse.
