    1. Thomas Jefferson, our third President, made a deal with Napoleon Bonaparte of France to buy a gigantic portion of land for a low price of $15 million! Colonists could now settle there.
    2. Of course, someone had to find out what that land looked like, so the President sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the territory. They came back with news of the vast, new territory, and Americans everywhere were itching to settle in the new land.
    3. In 1849, California was swarmed when gold was discovered. Thousands of prospectors were struck with gold fever, and soon the west was filled with people!

    - Lewis and Clark were the first people to discover the west portion of the U.S. Thomas Jefferson sent them explore not to long after the Louisiana purchase.
    - The California Gold Rush in 1848 started when James Marshall found gold.
Everyone who heard about this rushed over to find some gold for themselves
but this event soon ended in 1855 when no more gold was found.
    - Daniel Boone moved people towards the west when he settled Missouri.
Daniel had also encouraged people to be adventurous.

    1. Lewis and Clark, they were basically hired to go explore the west. But they didn't know the land very well, they didn't know the land marks. On the way to the west they met an native American named, Sacajawea. She led them to the coast line into the Oregon territory which eventually became the Oregon trail.

    2. The CA gold rush is another reason because, when a farmer found out about the gold he told his friend not to tell anyone else. Word spread quickly, and soon enough CA had enough people to become a state. Some people had contracted "Gold fever". This is where people are greedy enough to kill and steal another persons gold.

3.Our third President Thomas Jefferson bought a big piece of land from Napoleon Bonaparte. The price was 15M which is a low price for that much land. The reason why Jefferson bought this piece of land was so that the USA could grow, and bring more people over to the US.

They did.
    3. James Monroe, the fifth President of the US, convinced Spain to give Florida to the US. He agreed to pay $5 million in return which Spain owed the US citizens for damage to their property. The exact same treaty caused a boundary of the Louisiana territory between Spain and Mexico.

The CA. gold rush: In 1848, James Marshall, a ranch hand on John Sutter's farm discovered gold in California. John Sutter told the ranch hands to not tell anyone about it, because then they would come in and ruin his land. But eventually, the news leaked out, and the people all over America came rushing over to come and find gold. Gold had been discovered in 1848, but the gold-seekers came in 1849. That's why they are called the "forty-ninners". California grew quickly as more gold seekers came to find gold. Most of them did not get enough gold to live in California. So some towns in CA. became ghost towns.

The War of 1812: Napoleon Bonaparte, the cruel French soldier that ruled France to rule all of Europe. He agreed to sell the Louisiana Territory because he needed money to continue his wars in Europe. Although America had nothing to do with the wars in Europe, the British in Europe needed more people in the navy, so they began to stop American ships and abduct American sailors to fight in the Navy for the British. Also in doing this, the British had violated trade rights with the Americans and stirred up Indians on the frontier. Then the United States declared war on England in 1812. This war, the war of 1812, lasted for over two years.

The United States Wins the Southwest from Mexico: In 1821, the country of Mexico fought for and won their independence. They gained Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. In the early 1800's, after Mexico had won her independence, they wanted more settlers to come and move there. So they started to price land for cheap prices, thinking it would attract a lot of American settlers. It happened to attract a lot more settlers that they were hoping for, so many that they were afraid that they would want, and could, overthrow them. So Mexico decided not to let any more Americans in to Mexico. Then they tried to take away the right of the Americans living in Mexico. A dictator named General Santa Anna traveled up north to Texas to try to control it in 1833. After several battles with the Mexicans, the Americans in Texas voted for freedom in 1836. The most memorable battle was in Antonio, Texas were 187 men gathered inside a old Spanish mission called the Alamo and prepared to fight the Mexican army. The Men fought very valiantly for 11 days until there ammo ran out. Then the Mexican army poured in, killing all 187 men who fought tell the end. Even today, we remember the Alamo's who so bravely gave up their lives.
